SNOHOMISH — The Glacier Peak defense proved to be too much for Mountlake Terrace as the Grizzlies shut out the Hawks 31-0 Friday in the Wesco 3A South opener for both teams.
Kainoa Wong rushed for 81 of the Grizzlies’ 277 yards on the ground, with a majority of his yardage coming on a 39-yard score with 5:34 remaining that provided the game’s final score.
“(Kainoa) did a nice job,” Glacier Peak head coach Rory Rosenbach said. “He’s one of those guys who is very elusive when he gets space.”
Fellow Grizzlies running back Josh Pinca also ran for 81 yards and a touchdown.
On the other side of the ball, the Glacier Peak defense held the Hawks’ offense to just 110 total yards and earned its first shutout of the season. Two newcomers to the Glacier Peak starting lineup, sophomore defensive back Justin Guffey and sophomore linebacker Ian Black, provided several of the key stops.
“Our staff had a great plan tonight,” Rosenbach said. “We put the kids in the right spot, did a good job at executing and wrapped up players when they got to them. Those two sophomores had phenomonial games. Last year they were both on the freshman team and it’s a big jump from that to varsity. For Guffey, it was his best overall game as far as communication went tonight.”
