MONROE -- The Monroe School District's board has set two meetings to get opinions from the community about funding public schools. Each evening will highlight what past funding efforts have accomplished, then focus on upcoming challenges.
The first session is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at Hidden River Middle School, 9224 Paradise Lake Road, Snohomish. The second session is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at Park Place Middle School, 1408 West Main Street, Monroe.
In particular, the conversation will highlight the current support from local taxpayers and the future of that support.
Currently, about 20 percent of the school district's funding comes from the "learning" levy, which has helped purchase new textbooks and provide staff training. The levy also supports school bus routes, helps struggling students and funds special programs such as art, music and after-school activities and athletics.
The levy was last approved in 2012 and expires in December 2014. In October, members of the school board are expected to set priorities for the levy including the amount and duration.
Local voters will be asked in February to renew local funding. People unable to attend are asked to send their thoughts by email to or call 360-804-2503.
