Prep volleyball: Jackson 3, Mount Vernon 2

MILL CREEK — First they had to come back, then they had to hold on.

In the end, the Jackson Timberwolves were able to do both in a 3-2 Wesco 4A North victory over Mount Vernon Tuesday night at Jackson High School.

The Bulldogs (1-1 league, 4-2 overall) took the first set from Jackson 25-15, before the Timbwerwolves outscored Mount Vernon 25-13 and 25-19 in the second and third sets, respectively. After Mount Vernon won a close fourth set, 25-21, Jackson (2-0, 5-1) closed out the match with a 15-9 win in the fifth and deciding set.

“Baically, we came out and said, ‘We need to pass (better).’ That’s been our crutch at times,” said Jackson head coach Mindy Staudinger. “In set two we passed well and when you pass well good things happen. That’s our hammering point this season. We have to be able to pass. And we have to be able to finish.”

Payton Lockname led Jackson with 22 kills and 10 digs, while helping get the Timberwolves back on track in the second and third sets. Natalie O’Hare also had a big game for Jackson piling up 49 assists.

“Peyton Lockname really came on and becmae really consistent,” Staudinger said. “We got the ball to her. She swung well. She was the hot hand for the night. Natalie O’Hare came in as our setter and worked really hard to get her feet in place and set some really nice balls.”

Mount Vernon was led by Karly Jones who had 30 kills.

“She did a really good job of moving the ball around,” Staudinger said. “They run a very fast offense and their hitters are really adept. She dos a good job of keeping the ball in play and makes very few errors.”
