Seahawks claim QB B.J. Daniels off waivers from San Francisco

The 49ers decision to release quarterback B.J. Daniels caught people by surprise Tuesday, and a day later the Seahawks grabbed the rookie off of waivers.

Like Russell Wilson, Daniels, a seventh-round pick out of South Florida, is an athletic, mobile quarterback, and like Wilson, one knock against Daniels is his 5-11 height. Undersized or not, however, Daniels was impressive in the preseason, which is what made his release something of a surprise in the Bay Area.

On Tuesday, Jim Harbaugh told reporters that the 49ers hoped to get Daniels onto their practice squad, but Pete Carroll apparently didn't want to let that happen.

To make room on the roster, linebacker John Lotulelei, who Seattle signed as an undrafted rookie in April, was released.

This will mark just the second time in Pete Carroll's tenure that the Seahawks have had three quarterback on the 53-man roster. In 2010, the Seahawks had Matt Hasselbeck and Charlie Whitehurst, and in 2012 it was Wilson and Matt Flynn, while in 2011 they kept Tarvaris Jackson, Whitehurst and Josh Portis for most of the season before eventually releasing Portis late in the year.
