Big problems require big solutions. The rules of the House of Representatives require all members to vote on the speaker position. If all the Democrats would promise to vote for John Boehner if the speaker would jettison the tea party outliers, the more moderate Republicans could then form a majority to pass legislation. The tea party Republicans would of course squeal and call for a speaker vote, but then Mr. Boehner could be a real statesman, and keep his job. If Democrats went back on their promise, the whole country would be watching and hold them accountable. More moderate Republicans could then run for re-election in 2014 as the people who saved the country.
