ARLINGTON — After spotting South Whidbey an early 10-point lead, the Lakewood Cougars responded with 35 straight points to win the Cascade Conference game.
“We made some big plays when we need to,” said Lakewood head coach Dan Teeter. “The defense was solid against the run and made (South Whidbey) fairly one-dimensional, but they were still moving the ball. When we tightened up in the red zone that was the turning point for us.”
Lakewood quarterback Blake Watts led the Cougars offense with 206 yards and two touchdowns passing, while adding 121 rushing yards.
Nick French scored on a 2-yard run and Cooper Nichols made a 22-yard field goal to propel the Falcons to a 10-0 lead.
But Watts responded with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Brett Bustad and Paulmer Gregory had a 13-yard TD run to put Lakewood in front at the half.
In the third quarter, sophomore Josh Dickey made his first varsity reception, a 47-yard TD pass from Watts, that gave the Cougars a two-score advantage.
Keana Jackson added two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter to ensure the Cougars moved to 5-0 on the season.
