A Snohomish woman, 22, was shot in the spine inches below her shoulder blades in Everett early Saturday morning. She was sitting in the back seat of a Ford Focus at the time.
The bullet was slowed by the car's metal frame and back seat. It didn't penetrate her body. The woman suffered bruising and reported considerable pain but was not seriously hurt, according to a police report.
"It definitely could have been a lot more serious injury," Everett police officer Aaron Snell said.
Police were called to a home in the 6200 block of Oakes Avenue early Saturday morning.
The woman told police that she and her boyfriend went to the home to pick up someone they thought would be there.
The couple reported that they were met at the door by a man with a handgun who allegedly threatened to shoot them.
They returned to the car. The boyfriend got in the driver's seat and the woman sat behind him in the back seat.
That's when the suspect, 31, allegedly shot at the car, police said.
Police went to the home where they arrested the suspect for investigation of first-degree assault. He was being held in the Snohomish County Jail on $200,000 bail.
The bullet was found inside the victim's car and its casing was recovered near a doorway of the home, the police report said.
Police said the suspect showed concern for the woman's well being and for himself. He told an officer he was worried about a long prison term if he's convicted.
"I've got a 15-year-old daughter and I'm never going to see her again," he allegedly said.
