Broken Seattle water main repaired
The utility says crews replaced a 16-foot section of the 16-inch diameter pipe. They're trying to find out what caused the cast iron pipe to break. Although it's about 80 years old, it's expected to last twice as long.
Water gushed about 20 feet in the air from the rupture until firefighters closed a valve.
The break occurred under a viaduct that carries 45th Street between the shopping center and the University of Washington campus. Police closed the road until the city Transportation Department determined there was no damage to supports.
