EDMONTON, Alberta — The Everett Silvertips are showing they know how to win when goals are at a premium.
Everett played another sound defensive game Wednesday night as the Tips knocked off the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-2.
Everett scored just five goals in its previous three games, yet came away with five points on two wins and an overtime loss. Wednesday’s game was in the same mould as Everett led 2-1 much of the way before a flurry of three goals took place in the game’s final 30 seconds.
Matt Pufahl and Joshua Winquist each scored twice for Everett (5-1-1-0), with both scoring into an empty net in the final seconds. For Pufahl it was the second straight game with two goals for the overage defenseman.
Austin Lotz made 28 saves to earn the win in goal for the Tips, who improved to 2-0 on their four-game road trip.
Cody Corbett scored both goals for Edmonton (3-5-0-0). Tristan Jarry made 27 saves in net for the Oil Kings.
Everett was gifted an early lead just 1 minute, 24 seconds into the game. Pufahl sent an innocent shot goalward from the point, but Jarry fumbled it and the puck trickled through his legs to give the Tips a 1-0 lead.
Edmonton quickly tied it on the power play. Corbett’s shot from the point found its way through traffic and past Lotz to make it 1-1 at 5:46.
The Tips regained the lead at 14:01. Winquist shot from close range and began celebrating, but no goal was given initially. However, after a video review the goal was given as Everett went ahead 2-1.
The second period featured lots of power plays, but few scoring chances as it remained 2-1 going into the third. It stayed that way though most of the third until goals came in bunches in the final 30 seconds. Pufahl scored the length of the ice into an empty net with 30 seconds remaining to seemingly ice it. However, Corbett put home a rebound with 18 seconds remaining to give Edmonton one last glimmer. But then Winquist scored into the empty net with seven seconds left to seal it.
