MARYSVILLE — Amanda Klep finished off a hat trick and the match with a 73rd-minute goal, leading the Marysville Pilchuck girls soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Mountlake Terrace. The Wesco 3A crossover game almost didn’t end there, as a final-minute shot by the Hawks bounced off one post then the other before boucing out and marking the end of a hard-fought game.
“Amanda had to work really hard for what she got,” said Tomahawks head coach Paul Bartley. “Mountlake Terrace is a really good team. They are impressive.” Klep scored the game’s first goal in the 31st minute, but Lily Hart and Riley Zucker answered back, both scoring goals in the next five minutes to put the Hawks up 2-1 at halftime.
“We came out really slow in the first half, it was probably the worst half we’ve played all year,” Bartley said.
Part of the problem was a defense that wasn’t at full strength. The Tomahawks have played the last two games without center-back Makenna Stadum, who has been sick.
“When she’s played we’ve only given up two goals in league, we miss her a lot,” said Bartley.
After a locker-room discussion, however, the Tomahawks started to build up momentum of their own.
“They adjusted, we figured it out, got it done,” Bartley said. “That has been our biggest challenge: organizing our defense this year.”
The score stayed 2-1 until midway through the second half when Klep took a corner from Mackinzie Nolte and put the equalizer in the net.
Ten minutes later, Klep did it again, scoring the game-winner fed by Cassandra Labrake with just seven minutes to go in the game.
Mountlake Terrace didn’t let them relax, though, making everyone hold their breath as the ball rattled around the goal in the game’s final seconds.
