Fire guts Mountlake Terrace home

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE -- A fire at a Mountlake Terrace house Thursday left several people homeless and caused more than $260,000 damage.

Dispatchers received multiple calls reporting flames coming from the split-entry house in the 22800 block of 41st Pl. W. A woman, her adult son and his two sons – ages 1 and 6 – got out of the burning house safely.

"Firefighters could see a column of smoke as they approached and the back of the house was engulfed in flames when the first fire engine arrived," said Leslie Hynes, a spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1, which provides fire and emergency medical service in the City of Mountlake Terrace.

Firefighters from Fire District 1 and Lynnwood responded. They had the fire under control within about 20 minutes. No one was injured.

Fire investigators determined the fire started in the rear of the house in the area of a barbecue that had been used earlier in the evening.

The fire caused heavy damage throughout the home and left it uninhabitable.

The Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the renters – a couple who lived on the upper floor of the home, and their son, his wife and two children, who lived in the basement.
