Titans make it a one-score game
Ryan Fitzpatrick responded to his interception with a nice drive that got the Titans deep into Seahawks territory. They had to settle for a short field goal, but that did make it a one-score game with 2:18 left in the game.
Lynch’s second TD makes it 20-10
Seattle got the ball back quickly following its last score because Ryan Fitzpatrick made the dumb decision to throw deep at Richard Sherman, who as he so often does, came up with an interception.
After a beautiful sideline catch by Sidney Rice moved the Seahawks to the 3-yard line, Lynch powered in for a TD.
Seahawks survive another gaffe, take 13-10 lead
The Seahawks are back on top following a 29-yard Hauschka field goal, and while settling for three after having first-and-goal from the 2-yard line, it could have been much worse.
For the fourth time since late in the first half, the Seahawks fumbled, but this time Marshawn Lynch’s fumble which was nearly scopped up by Titans LB Zach Brown instead went off Brown’s hands and right to Russell Wilson.
Hauschka returns, hits 31-yard FG to make it 10-10
Apparently Steven Hauschka was cleared for a concussion, because he’s back, which means the Seahawks had a functional kicking game, and were able to make a 31-yard FG.
On Seattle’s previous possession, the Seahawks’ comedy of errors continued when Sidney Rice, who had already picked up a first down, stretched for an extra yard and had the ball knocked loose. The Titans got an extra 15 yards worth of field position because of a late hit on Michael Bowie, but the Seattle D came up with a quick three-and-out to end that threat.
Special teams disaster gives Titans 10-7 halftime lead
Well that was, um, interesting. After the Seahawks forced a punt, then caught a break when Titans punter Brett Kern dropped the snap, giving Seattle a short field with 54 seconds left, it looked like they might have a chance to get into field goal range.
One small problem with that, however.
A few minutes earlier, kicker Steven Hauschka was run over by Darius Reynaud, and at the end of the half he was in the locker room being evaluated for a concussion. That means punter Jon Ryan would be attempting any end-of-half FG, and while simply having to replace your kicker would be bad enough, the Seahawks also needed a holder, because that’s normally Ryan’s job.
Chris Maragos was that guy, and when the Seahawks had a chance at a short field goal at the end of the half. What ensued was basically the worst possible outcome, short of somebody getting injured on the play. Maragos bobbled the snap, then tried to throw it away, but was stripped as he went to the ground. The loose ball was picked up by Jason McCourty, who went 77 yards for a score, and for the second time in as many games, a Seahawks FG attempt turned into a 10-point swing.
Marshawn Lynch gives Seahawks 7-3 lead
Pete Carroll has been critical of himself a couple of times for, in his words, “getting hormonal” when he should settle for a safe field goal. Well he did it again on fourth-and-one, but was rewarded with a touchdown when Marshawn Lynch plowed in from a yard out.
One potential injury update: K Steven Hauschka was flattened by Darius Reynaud while trying to tackle the Titans kick returner and appeared to suffer an injury on the play. He just went back to the locker room for evaluation. If he can’t kick, punter Jon Ryan would take over that job, and if you’re wondering who the Seahawks’ backup holder is if Ryan is kicking, that would be S Jeron Johnson. Also worth noting. Brandon Browner has been out of the game for a while. He doesn’t appear injured, so this might just be the result of him struggling early in the game.
Titans up 3-0 after one quarter
The Seahawks’ third-down struggles continue. A week after going 2 for 12 on third down, the Seahawks are 0 for 3 today, leading to three Jon Ryan punts.
The Seahawks had good field position on their last drive thanks to Earl Thomas’ third interception of the season, but did nothing with it. A Russell Wilson scramble appeared to give the Sehawk a third-down conversion, but it was called back for a hold on James Carpenter.
Titans take an early lead
For the first time this season, the Seahawks are behind at home. That’s because the Titans went up 3-0 on a 38-yard Rob Bironas field goal that resulted in some less than stellar play from Seattle’s cornerbacks. First, Brandon Browner was badly beaten by Kendall Wright on a 32-yard gain, then three plays later Richard Sherman hit Ryan Fitzpatrick out of bounds to give the Titans an extra 15 yards that put them into field goal range.
That’s hardly a disastrous start, but it’s not what the Seahawks were looking for as they try to bounce back from their first lost of the season, and especially not from a defense that gave up some big plays last week.
Pregame and inactives
Greetings from CenturyLink Field, where the Seahawks and Titans will kick off in a little over an hour. Unlike previous games here where lightning/monsoon conditions have been a factor, it looks like it’ll be a pretty pleasant day for football.
No big surprises on today’s inactives, though if you were hoping to see Zach Miller return from the hamstring injury that kept him out last week, well I’ve got bad news for you. He’s not playing. Marshawn Lynch, however, is active after having a hip injury pop up late in the week that kept him out of Friday’s practice. Also, as expected, the Seahawks will be without middle linebacker Bobby Wagner (ankle).
