MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Stanwood dealt Mountlake Terrace its first league loss of the season, dropping the first set 22-25 but rallying to win the next three 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 for a 3-1 victory.
All four sets were close, with neither team scoring fewer than 20 points in the match.
A nail-biter is exactly what Spartans head coach Erik Titus expected.
“When you’re a fairly good team, and you’re playing a good team that has a 4-0 record … you’re probably not going to have a blowout win in either direction,” he said.
Jillian Jacobs led Stanwood with 12 kills, several of which came at key moments. “(Jacobs) had a really good evening. She had a couple of timely kills and served really well from the back,” said Titus.
The win moved the Spartans to 3-1 and fourth place in an increasingly tight Wesco 3A. And while none of their remaining games are against teams currently ahead of them in the standings, they can’t rest easy just yet.
“You can’t look past any of them,” said Titus. “I’m going to guess that we’re circled on a lot of people’s schedules as a measuring stick.”
