EDMONDS — Rylee Peterson scored two goals, including the eventual game-winner in the 78th minute, and Edmonds-Woodway rallied to beat Arlington 2-1 in a Wesco 4A crossover match at Edmonds Stadium on Tuesday night.
Peterson secured the victory in spectacular fashion when her shot from 35 yards caught Arlington goalkeeper Kat Sanchez slightly off her line and curled down into the net. This came after Peterson headed home Savannah VanCitters’ corner kick to tie the match in the 59th minute.
According to Warriors head coach Bill LeCompte, Peterson has become a true threat to opposing defenses in her third varsity season.
“(Peterson) is understanding the position better … She’s starting to figure out how to distribute the ball and she’s finding open spots when the attack is starting to happen,” said LeCompte. “It’s creating problems for (opposing) backlines.”
Peterson’s heroics ensured that the Warriors moved into a tie with Jackson atop the Wesco 4A South standings, with Kamiak just one point behind.
Although Edmonds-Woodway controlled the majority of possession, the visiting Eagles stunned the home side in the 23rd minute when Kaylee Bartley rifled in a shot from long distance. That goal, LeCompte said, woke the Warriors up.
“They caught us on a counter-attack,” said LeCompte. “It made us have to elevate our transition defense and we did a better job from then on.”
