THE DALLES, Ore. — Authorities say a plainclothes officer from The Dalles returned fire and killed a man fleeing from investigators who hoped to question him in a rape case.
The officer is expected to survive.
The Dalles Daily Chronicle reported that officers from Oregon and Washington went to a house in Wishram, Wash., on Wednesday night to question the man.
The Dalles police said officer who approached the front of the house saw a man with a firearm inside.
The police say the man fled out the back, where officers were stationed, and after a chase of about one block he fired and was killed.
Names of those involved have not been released. The officer is described as a 17-year veteran of the police.
