MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — The Mountlake Terrace volleyball team won a tight fifth set to beat Meadowdale 3-2 and move into a tie for first place in the Wesco 3A standings. Setter Justine Kelly had 11 kills and 54 assists and finished strong to lead the Hawks to victory 25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 13-25, 15-11.
The teams traded the first four sets, with Meadowdale winning the fourth set by a decisive score of 25-13. But the Hawks bounced back and the fifth set was close all the way. The two teams battled to a score of 8-8 and Meadowdale took an 11-10 lead. But some clutch play by Kelly helped put it away for the Hawks out score the Mavs 5-0 to take the set and the match.
“She just served really well,” said Mountlake Terrace head coach Marietta Snyder. “She had some really key kills. She plays really aggressive. I think that’s what actually turned it for us.”
Outside hitter Madison Eich (20 kills, 10 digs) also excelled for the Hawks.
Amy Tickel contributed 22 digs and Tara Fishback had 46 assists and 14 digs for Meadowdale.
“It was a fun match to actually coach. It was a little intense, but it was fun,” said Snyder.
