Murphy girls soccer beats Cedarcrest to clinch No. 1 seed

EVERETT — The Archbishop Murphy girls soccer team hasn’t quite wrapped up a second consecutive Cascade Conference title, but the Wildcats clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2A district tournament after beating Cedarcrest 3-0 on Thursday.

“(The No. 1 seed) is important,” said Archbishop Murphy head coach Mike Bartley. “It means we have homefield advantage in the first two games … and a good opportunity to go to state. If we go 2-0 in those two home games we clinch a state berth.”

Sammi Conard scored in the second minute to get the Wildcats off to a quick start.

“It was awesome,” said Bartley about Conard’s goal. “She got the ball on the wing, cut it back to her left foot and hit it far post from 18 yards out.”

Cali Crisler doubled the Wildcats’ advantage in the 20th minute and Claire Feeney capped the scoring in the 57th to ensure a 26th straight Cascade Conference win for Archbishop Murphy. Overall, the Wildcats have won 30 consecutive regular season matches dating back to the 2011 season.

“A lot of it is that we have really good depth as far as players,” said Bartley. “They are very talented and smart kids. There’s a lot of pride in the program and in the school and that speaks for itself. We focus on consistancy game-in, game-out and try to play to our potential and I think that’s happened.”
