SHORELINE — Glacier Peak finally put Shorewood away 20-8 in a game that seemed more follies than football.
The game was 3-0 for about a half after Glacier Peak scored a field goal on their opening drive. After that the points dried up, but the action didn’t.
That action included repeated turnovers, multiple fakes, sack after sack and a pair of blocked field goals by Glacier Peak’s Kaianoa Wong. That is, when the game was moving at all.
It often wasn’t. The clock stopped regularly for penalties, and unfortunately, quite a few times for injuries.
“This was a bit of a wakeup call for us,” said Glacier Peak head coach Rory Rosenbach. “We hurt ourselves a lot with penalties.”
The Grizzlies had at least 10 penalties for over 175 yards.
The game went late for another reason. Halftime was extended by about 20 minutes while an injured cheerleader was removed from the field by ambulance. Rosenbach confirmed that she suffered a broken arm.
The Grizzlies finally broke their scoring drought in the third quarter. Branson Corwin ran for a 2 yard TD after connecting with Trey Chambers on a 40 yard pass to make it 1st-and-goal.
Shorewood mounted a fourth-quarter charge after a Glacier Peak pick-6 was called back on a penalty. A 20 yard rushing TD by Aaron Okamura, followed by a 2-point conversion made it 11-8. Shorewood got the ball back with plenty of time left to drive for the win, but Okamura threw an interception trying to get rid of the ball while already going down to a sack.
Glacier Peak took advantage of the turnover, gaining some breathing room with a 29 yard passing TD to Jake Berg from Corwin. After a blocked extra point that would have been run back by Shorewood were that allowed, the Grizzlies eventually got the ball back, and Austin Hines kicked a final FG to cap off the Wesco 3A South victory.
Corwin finished the night 10-for-14 passing and Josh Pinca had 144 yards on 18 carries for Glacier Peak.
