Correction, Oct. 24, 2013: An earlier version of this story stated incorrectly that the opponents faced each other in a previous election.
Incumbent Susan Phillips faces challenger Leticia (Leti) Solis in the race for District 4 on the Edmonds School Board.
Phillips was first appointed to the board in November 2007. She currently serves as board vice president.
Points of pride during her tenure include working to ensure at-risk students see college as a realistic option, raising graduation rates, connecting preschool to kindergarten readiness, and weathering the recession, she said.
“I would love to remain involved and seeing this good work continue,” Phillips said.
If re-elected, her top goals include making sure there are smooth transitions to a new teacher evaluation system and to new state standards and tests that follow the Common Core, an initiative by 45 states to set common expectations in math and English language arts. “Those are two big changes — one is right on our doorstep, and one is on the horizon not that far away,” she said.
School leaders also are in the midst of discussions about a possible capital bond measure on the February 2014 ballot to deal with overcrowding. Phillips said she supports a bond proposal, particularly with the goal of creating more classroom space for full-day kindergarten and first through third grades.
Phillips, 54, works in the hospitality and tourism industry. She and her husband have two children in college.
Solis could not be reached for comment.
