SNOHOMISH — Emily Minogue scored the game’s lone goal in the third minute of overtime on a low kick that just managed to get past Arlington goalkeeper Kat Sanchez as Snohomish defeated the Eagles 1-0 in a Wesco 4A North match that clinched a league title for the Panthers.
“We had been pressing pretty hard on goal for the last 15 minutes before that,” said Panthers head coach April VanAssche on Minogue’s game-winner. “The ball came from the right side, Ellie (Otteson) got it and poked it through and Emily slotted it past Sanchez in the corner in the near post.”
VanAssche credited both teams play in and her squads determination that led to the overtime win.
“It was definitely a good battle on both sides, said VanAsshce. “Both keepers played really well. We were able to push more in the second half … and playing on our home turf definitely helped. We were determined out there tonight.”
With the victory Snohomish clinched their second straight Wesco 4A North title, the timing of which VanAssche believes will give her team a bit of relief.
“This was our first goal of the season, to return as Wesco champ,” VanAssche said. “We felt it was important to keep the title and to take it early. It’s really nice not having to worry about it and it means there’s less pressure for our next game.”
