BOISE, Idaho — An emergency medical technician was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday and five other people were injured after a car struck an ambulance on U.S. Highway 95 north of Boise.
The ambulance was transporting a patient to Weiser Memorial Hospital Tuesday afternoon when it was struck by a northbound car, the Idaho State Police said. The car’s driver swerved to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of it, which had slowed to yield to the ambulance.
EMTs Sandra Sova, 62, of Mesa, and Jonathon Dickinson, 70, of Council, were in the back of the ambulance and were not belted in, the ISP said. Both were airlifted to a Boise hospital.
The Idaho Statesman reports Sova was listed in critical condition Wednesday morning while Dickinson was in serious condition.
The driver of the ambulance, Charles Penninger, 66, of Council, and the patient were taken to the hospital in Weiser. The driver of the car, Samuel McCartney, 36, of Twin Falls, and his passenger Heather Hetzel, 37, of Boise, were taken to the Weiser hospital by private vehicle.
ISP spokeswoman Teresa Baker said the crash is still under investigation.
