MOUNT VERNON — The Wesco 4A North singles championship was an all-Arlington affair, with senior Trent Sarver defeating teammate Connor Ghirardo 6-1, 6-0, in the singles championship match Wednesday afternoon at Mount Vernon High School.
It was the second straight win by that score for Sarver, who also defeated Snohomish freshman Kincaid Norris 6-1, 6-0 in his first match of the day. Ghirardo, a junior, defeated Garret Amsberry (Monroe) 6-0, 6-3 to advance to the championship game where he fell to Sarver.
Norris took third place in the league tournament, defeating Mount Vernon’s Roland Farrell 7-6, 6-3 in the third/fourth place game. Amsberry is the league’s alternate, defeating Troy Lian (Lake Stevens) for fifth place.
In the doubles tournament, it was host Mount Vernon that took the top spot thanks to senior Kyle Frederick and junior Casey Goodwin. The duo defeated Snohomish’s Andrew Ivelia and Jory Strickland in a three-set match — 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 — to take the league’s top spot. Ivelia and Strickland finished second, followed by Gollin Gagnon and Drake Wilson, also from Snohomish, in third and Grant Shultz and Tyler Hilde — a pair of seniors from Lake Stevens — in fourth place.
Stephen Ball and Alec Arevalo (Lake Stevens) defeated Monroe’s Nick Bruton and Dillon Bull in the fifth/sixth place game, making Ball and Arevalo the league’s alternate doubles team.
