Everett volleyball gains edge on Stanwood with win

Seagulls climb above Spartans in Wesco 3A standings with straight sets win

EVERETT -- A tightly fought first set turned into a comfortable win for the Everett volleyball team on Thursday as the Seagulls swept Stanwood 25-22, 25-17, 25-17 and moved above the Spartans in the Wesco 3A standings.
Lauren Stiger led Everett (5-2 league, 10-3 overall) with 13 kills, with Megan Canonica adding nine kills. Everett head coach Kris Jones credited setter Tenika Wentworth (29 assists, 14 digs) with getting the Seagulls' offense in gear.
"We had really good passing and Tenika had some really good digs to make sets out of," said Jones.
Kitt Campbell had 31 assists and 10 digs and Rebecca Hardenbrook recorded 12 kills and six digs for Stanwood (5-3, 9-4)
Initially, Jones believed it would be another close contest between the Seagulls and Spartans. Everett prevailed in five sets over Stanwood in the first match of the season.
"I was thinking maybe (the match) would go five and if we're lucky we could pull out a win," said Jones.
Her prediction looked to be accurate in the opening stages of the rematch. According to Jones, neither team was able to build a lead of more than a single point in the first game. Tied at 22, Everett was able to win the last three points to take the set and deflate the Spartans at the same time.
"I thought, 'Whoever could take this, could take the match.'" said Jones. "It shifted momemtum our way,"
Everett finished off the contest with ease and now sits in third place, a game behind co-leaders Mountlake Terrace and Meadowdale.
