Silvertips top Blazers 7-6 in OT
Joshua Winquist scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Tips won a topsy-turvy contest against the Kamloops Blazers 7-6 Saturday night.
Everett played from behind all night long, but scored four times in the third period to take a 6-5 lead, only for Kamloops' Cole Ully to tie the score with 6.9 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.
However, the Tips got a power play in overtime -- Everett's sixth power play between the third period and OT -- and Winquist one-timed in a feed from Matt Pufahl to end it.
The victory came one night after the Tips won a wild 6-5 decision at Vancouver. The high-scoring games were a departure for the Tips, who came into the weekend having scored 35 goals and allowed 25 in 12 games.
Winquist finished with a goal and three assists to lead Everett (10-2-2-0), which has won four straight. Pufahl, Ben Betker, Cole MacDonald, Tyler Sandhu, Manraj Hayer and Dawson Leedahl also scored for the Tips, who finished 4-for-9 on the power play. Austin Lotz earned the win in goal with 24 saves.
Chase Souto had two goals and two assists and Matt Needham added a goal and three assists for Kamloops (4-9-1-0), which dropped its third straight. Aspen Sterzer and Josh Connolly also scored for the Blazers, while Taran Kozun made 29 saves in net.
Everett trailed 4-2 going into the third, but knotted it up with two goals in 11 seconds early in the period. Sandhu put home a rebound on the power play at 2 minutes, 7 seconds to get the Tips within one, and Hayer converted a feed from Winquist in transition just after the ensuing face-off to make it 4-4.
Kamloops, which had led since the 6:25 mark of the first period, regained the lead at 5:32 when Needham's shot hit Lotz's chest, rolled over his shoulder and into the net. But Leedahl took advantage of a Kamloops turnover and just got the puck past Kozun at 7:02 to tie it again. Then the Tips received a short five-on-three power play and converted on Pufahl's wrister from the point at 15:22 to take their first lead of the game.
Kamloops pressured late with Kozun pulled for an extra attacker, and when the Tips couldn't clear the zone, Ully put home a rebound with seconds remaining to get the game to overtime. But it was Everett that had the final say.
