EVERETT -- A convicted child molester who had admitted abusing dozens of boys will remain confined indefinitely undergoing sex offender treatment.
A Snohomish County jury on Thursday ruled that is Garth Snively, 63, belongs on McNeil Island, locked up as a sexually violent predator.
He was convicted in 1993 of child molestation and indecent liberties involving boys under 12 and served prison sentences through 2003. He's been locked up since under the state law that allows continued detention and treatment for people judged a risk of continued predatory sexual offenses.
According to state officials, Snively groomed victims by volunteering as a Boy Scout leader, Big Brother and Sunday school teacher. He's claimed as many as 100 victims, and currently admits molesting 37 boys.
Snively was seeking release from treatment and had several expert opinions on his side. State attorneys general resisted.
"The attorneys in the AG's Sexually Violent Predator Unit help keep dangerous offenders such as Garth Snively confined," Attorney General Bob Ferguson said in a press release. "These attorneys keep our communities safe."
