Everett aerospace firm fined by state

EVERETT -- A metal-finishing company that processes metals for the aerospace industry was fined $60,000 for unsafe handling and disposal of dangerous waste, the state Department of Ecology announced Tuesday.

Blue Streak Finishers, which on its website says it's a Boeing-approved supplier, also was ordered to make a list of fixes in the next 30 to 90 days, according to the state agency.

State inspectors visited the business at 1520 80th St. SW, Everett, three times in 2012 and this year. Inspectors said the company failed to properly identify and handle dangerous wastes, placed the waste in regular garbage and lacked proper testing, labeling and inspection of dangerous waste storage tanks.

The state agency said it told the company about the problems but continued to see violations during future visits. The Ecology Department said it could have fined the company $166,000 but decided against citing the company for duplicate violations in different production areas.

Blue Streak is ordered to take these actions: determine if a liquid waste currently being discharged to the sewer is a hazardous waste; make multiple waste tank corrections; develop a training program on proper and safe dangerous-waste handling; provide written records of proper employee training and dangerous-waste monitoring and handling; and prepare an emergency contingency plan, with police, fire and hospitals.

Blue Streak can appeal within 30 days to the Washington State Pollution Control Hearings Board.
