DUVALL -- The battle for the Cascade Conference's No. 2 seed needed a little extra time -- and a late penalty kick -- to decide a winner.
After Lakewood tied the game in the 70th minute on a corner kick, the Cougars and Cedarcrest continued to battle right into overtime. With about a minute left in the first overtime period, Lakewood was called for a foul and Brielle Rhode scored on a penalty kick to give Cedarcrest a 2-1 Cascade Conference win, and the league's No. 2 seed and a home game in the upcoming district tournament.
"It was definitely a close game as far as going back and forth," said Cedarcrest head coach Amanda Johnson. "It was a battle the whole time. I feel like every time we play Lakewood they give us a good game and it's a lot of fun."
Sydney Kuehn scored the first game of the goal when she put Cedarcrest up in the 67th minute off an assist from Rachel Wilhelm. The lead lasted about three minutes until Hailey Duitsman's corner kick curved into the goal to tie the game up and force the extra period.
The excitement for the fans at the game lasted right up until the penalty kick that clinched the win for the Red Wolves.
"I even had a parent from the other side come up and say, 'That was the funnest game I've watched in a long time,'" Johnson said. "I love that."
Both teams have secured district berths already. Lakewood will be the No. 3 seed in the 2A district tournament, behind league champion Archbishop Murphy and Cedarcrest.
"We fought hard," said Cougars' head coach Steve Brown. "It was a really good game. It was a good preparation game for districts, in my opinion, because we had to fight hard. I think the girls will respond just fine."
Johnson hopes her team can carry the momentum from Cedarcrest's big overtime win into the district tournament, which gets underway on Saturday.
"Hopefuly we an take the energy and intesnity that we had at the end against Lakewood into our next game," Johnson said. "...As we go into the playoffs we have some really tough games and it's going to take everything that we have (to be successful)."
