Prep tennis: 4A District 1 Tournament

MOUNT VERNON — Ben Mietzner of Jackson and Cascade’s Patrick Chung are back in familiar territory.

The duo will meet today in the 4A District 1 tournament singles championship at Mount Vernon High School in a rematch of last year’s title game, which Mietzner won 6-4, 6-0.

It was his first victory over Chung.

Mietzner, a junior, reached the title game with wins over Kincaid Norris (Snohomish) and Arlington’s Trent Sarver, the No. 1 seed out of the Wesco 4A North. Chung swept Mount Vernon senior Roland Farrell in straight sets and then defeated former Cascade teammate Jimmy Hua — who now plays for Kamiak — 6-1, 6-1.

In the consolation games today two pairs of teammates will be playing to stay alive for the district’s third and final state berth. Kamiak teammates Joseph Lee and Hua will play in one match while Sarver faces fellow Eagle Connor Ghirardo in the other consolation match.

In the doubles tournament it will be an all-Wesco 4A North affair, with Mount Vernon’s Casey Goodwin and Kyle Frederick meeting the Snohomish team of Andrew Ivelia and Jory Strickland in the district championship. Goodwin and Frederick defeated Ryan Tsuji and Thu Yein of Lynnwood and Kamiak’s Dominic Lee and Garrett Peterson. Ivelia and Strickland needed three sets in each of their matches to take care of a pair of Jackson doubles teams in Josh Yi and Bence Dare and the No. 1 team from the Wesco 4A South Peter Cung and Luke George.
