Don't know much about history: On this day in 1938, a radio broadcast of "The War of the Worlds" by Orson Welles that consisted of fake news bulletins panicked some listeners, who believed an actual Martian invasion was taking place.

This sort of thing could never happen today, because we have entire networks devoted to fake news.

Master thespians: PBS will pair "Sherlock," starring the ubiquitous Benedict Cumberbatch, and "Downton Abbey" on Sunday nights beginning in January, the network has announced.

That's so much good taste and refinement in one evening that we'll need to come down afterward with binge viewings of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo."
