SALEM, Ore. — The Willamette Education Service District has agreed to pay $150,000 to settle a former teacher’s whistleblower claim.
The Statesman Journal reports Terri Moore will get just over $86,000 in the settlement, and the rest of the money will cover legal fees. Moore says she lost her job because she repeatedly reported safety violations at the high school at Hillcrest Youth Correctional Facility and filed a formal complaint about harassment and bullying by the school’s principal.
Moore won’t be allowed to return as a teacher.
The district’s insurance carrier, the Special Districts Association of Oregon, decided to settle the case because of the costs of going to trial.
Willamette ESD has denied Moore’s allegations, but board Chairman Ken Hector says the settlement is best for the district.
