Kussman leads Kamiak girls soccer into district semis

LAKE STEVENS — Kamiak midfielder Brelyn Kussman scored the game’s lone goal in nasty weather conditions, guiding the Knights to a 1-0 win over Arlington in a 4A District 1 tournament first-round game played at Lake Stevens H.S. on Saturday.

“Brelyn had the game of her life today,” said Kamiak head coach Beth Stewart. “Her goal was from about 22, 23 yards out. She set herself up to shoot. I mean the entire team was yelling at her to shoot it. She shot it from the outside and it went over their keeper’s head and into the goal.”

Along with the weather, Stewart also knew if her squad was going to advance in tournament play, they would have to be able to match the Eagles’ speed on the field.

“We definitely knew we had to outshoot (Arlington) in the first half,” Stewart said. “Arlington does such a good job at the fast break, we knew we had to counter their attack. Our defenders did a great job and didn’t get flustered.”

Next up for Kamiak in the district tournament is Edmonds-Woodway, the top seed out of the Wesco 4A South.

“We’ve seen them twice (this year) and lost to them both times,” Stewart said. “There are areas we need to work on when we play them. It’ll be a great game. I love Woodway, love the field. It’s not loser-out, so it takes away a little bit of the pressure.”

Arlington’s season ends with a record of 10-6.

At Lake Stevens H.S.

Goals—Brelyn Kussman (K). Assists—none. Goalkeepers—Kamiak: Shannon Peth. Arlington: Kat Sanchez. Records—Kamiak 11-4-2 overall. Arlington 10-6-0.
