The Everett City Council is poised to appoint an interim member to fill the seat of departing councilmember Shannon Affholter. Twelve citizens have applied for this open position, six of them are women.
Women have been councilmembers for many years, yet always in the minority. To be truly representative of the city’s population, the council now has the opportunity to choose a woman to fill this seat until the election in 2014. Surely, among the six who have stepped forward there is a qualified woman.
Additionally, the council often consists of leaders in the business and financial sectors of our community. While this experience serves for many council decisions, there are other areas of interest and expertise which also serve our community. I urge the council to take this opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to diversity by forming a council with a broader base of representation for everyone in the city of Everett.
On Nov. 14 the council will choose the person who will fill this open seat. You can have a voice in this decision by attending the meeting or contacting your council members by phone or email. Let your voice be heard.
