Here’s a roundup of some outdoor-related events coming up soon.
Winter Adventures: The Everett Mountaineers winter course night is at 7p.m. Wednesday in Everett. Representatives will there to preview and answer your questions about the alpine scrambling, avalanche, back-country skiing, basic climbing, cross-country skiing, and winter camping courses. Rocks: Geologist Dr. David Montgomery will speak at Town Hall in Seattle at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. He’ll bring along roughly a dozen of his favorite rocks from his personal collection for hands-on encounters. He’ll share the stories, and maybe songs, of the geologic stories the rocks tell. You can also bring your favorite rock and tell its story. Get more info here.
Bird safety: The Pilchuck Audubon’s monthly meeting is at 7 p.m. Friday at Everett Firefighters Hall, 2411 Hewitt Ave. The speaker is Mel Walters, who for more than 40 years has worked to keep birds safe from man-made structures. Get more info here.
Free days: For Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 9-11, access to nearly all federal lands, including National Parks, will be free. More info here.
Birds: See the premiere of “Birds, Backyard Habitat and Beyond,” a film by Craig and Joy Johnson of Whidbey Island. The film shows birds and mammals foraging, birds nesting and young birds being fed by their parents. It also includes ideas to increase the variety of birds in your yard. There will be two showings, noon and 2 p.m. on Sunday followed by a Q&A with Joy and Craig after each show. The event is at The Clyde Theatre, 217 First St., Langley; 360-221-5525. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. The event is a benefit to help Craig Johnson with his health challenges.
Beavers: See the film “Beavers” at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Northwest Stream Center in McCollum Park in Everett. The film is 31 minutes long and follows the activities of a family of beavers in the Canadian Rockies. The event is free, but you must call 425-316-5892
Winter scrambling: Learn about the fun and challenges of winter scrambling at a seminar on Nov. 21 at the Drewel Building, meeting room 2, 3000 Rockefeller Ave. The speakers will discuss snowshoeing, winter scrambling, skiing and avalanche issues. Get more info here.
Warren Miller: The legendary film series comes to Everett on Nov. 21 at Historic Everett Theatre. Get in the mood for winter with the best — and craziest — of skiing and snowboarding. This year’s film is “Ticket to Ride” and it’s the 64th annual ski and snowboard film. Get more info here.
