Prep volleyball: Archbishop Murphy goes 1-1 at districs

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — After dropping its district opener in a five-set match against Lynden, Archbishop Murphy rebounded with a 3-0 victory over Lake Washington in the Wildcats’ second contest of the evening to continue on in the 2A District 1/2 volleyball tournament Wednesday night at Mountlake Terrace High School.

Sam Hayward had 32 kills and 37 digs in the opening match, which Archbishop Murphy lost 3-2. Croline Hoban had eight kils and 14 digs and Jaime Cymbaluk added seven kills, seven aces and eight digs for the Wildcats.

In the second game of the night, Hayward came up big again with 14 kills and 21 digs as Archbishop Murphy defeated Lake Washington 25-19, 25-21, 25-21. Emily Capponi had four kills and 15 digs in the Wildcats’ victory and Emily Capponi had 15 digs and four kills.

Archbishop Murphy moves on in the consolation round of the tournament and will play again Saturday as the Wildcats try to clinch one of the final two berths from the district to state.
