BELLINGHAM — The Lakewood Cougars dropped their district opener 3-0 to Squalicum at the District 1/2 volleyball tournament Wednesday night at Squalicum High School.
Larissa Gemmer-Block had 13 kills and 19 digs, Erin White had 26 assists and 15 digs and Molli Heckathorn had five aces in the Cougars’ loss to the Storm.
In its second match of the day, Lakewood kept its season alive with a 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 24-26, 15-9 win against Cascade Conference rival Cedarcrest, which lost its opening contest to Burlington-Edison. White had 46 assists in the second match — two short of the school record — as Lakewood fought off the Red Wolves. Kendall O’Kinsella had 15 kills and 13 digs, Kate Anderson had 21 kills and eight digs and Aimee White added 25 digs for the Cougars, who will face Lynden on Saturday in a loser-out game as Lakewood tries to clinch one of the district’s last two state berths.
The loss ended Cedarcrest’s season.
