WHAT: Wallich’s wood fern, Dryopteris wallichiana, has deep green fronds in a wide, graceful shape, that last well into winter.
The fronds collapse in late winter and give rise to the new growth. The new fronds unfurl in a bright gold-green that darkens as they mature.
WHERE: Use alone as a focal point or clustered into a spectacular small group. This fern grows best in rich moist to well-drained soil in a location protected from winds.
Provide regular watering during dry weather to keep the fronds from drying out.
This fern grows well in light to deep shade. To keep its appearance tidy cut the old fronds to the ground in late February or early March, before the new fronds appear.
SIZE: The evergreen wood fern can reach 4 feet in height and up to 4-feet wide.
