EVERETT — A convicted felon who was the subject of a 10-hour manhunt last month in the Stanwood area was charged Friday with assaulting a sheriff’s deputy.
Duane “D.J.” Sanders, 29, allegedly pounded on a sheriff’s deputy during a heated dispute about whether he was going back to jail. Sanders had outstanding warrants for his arrest and was parked near a stolen vehicle.
The deputy restrained one of Sanders’ hands with cuffs before the man reportedly pulled away. Sanders allegedly got on top of the deputy and punched him in the head.
The deputy tried to hang on to the Stanwood man but Sanders broke free and ran off into some nearby woods. Police dogs and a sheriff’s helicopter crew joined the hunt for the fugitive. Deputies called off the search. Sanders showed up at the county jail later that day and turned himself in. He was still wearing the handcuffs.
Prosecutors charged Sanders with third-degree assault. He remains behind bars on $500,000 bail.
The deputy needed stitches to close up wounds to a hand and ear, court papers said.
