Associated Press
SEATTLE -- The Seattle School Board voted to pay $700,000 to settle a lawsuit from the family of a girl who was sexually assaulted at Roosevelt High School by a registered sex offender.
School board member Michael DeBell told KIRO the board settled to prevent the case from going to court.
The 14-year-old freshman was assaulted in May 2010 in a restroom by an 18-year-old student who had been classified as a Level 2 sex offender. He was sentenced to a year in jail.
By law, the school staff was told he was a sex offender, but not students and parents. The family said the school failed to adequately supervise the 18-year-old and had claimed $4 million in damages.
