Machinists union: The vote is on

Jonathan Battaglia, a spokesman for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), said Saturday the vote on a controversial eight-year Boeing Co. contract extension is still planned for Wednesday.

Battaglia was in the state Capitol in Olympia with two other IAM representatives. They were videotaping interviews with individual lawmakers. The interviews took place before lawmakers voted Saturday on two bills — to extend tax breaks for Boeing and other aerospace companies and to spend more on education and training for aerospace workers.

“We are talking to a few people to see how they feel about the bills,” he said.

He said he was “not sure yet” how the interviews might be used. Lawmakers interviewed by the IAM representatives presumed it would be to help persuade the 22,000 members of IAM District 751 to back the contract, which promises to place work on the new 777X in Washington in exchange for takebacks.
