A gluten-free breakfast from Camano Island

  • Jennifer Bardsley

A couple of months ago when I shared that I was gluten intolerant, a reader named Fred emailed me and suggested that I try Purple Sunrise cereal from Camano Island Mills.

I remembered hearing about the company in an article Gale Fiege wrote this past March, but I hadn’t bothered to go online and order anything. Fred’s email was so thoughtful and articulate, that I decided I better give this cereal a try.

I’m so glad I did!

Purple Sunrise takes about five minutes to cook on the stove and comes out the consistency of porridge. It has a tasty, nutty flavor that doesn’t need any sugar or milk to doctor it up.

The two pound bag I bought was expensive, but it contains 24 servings. That’s a lot more than my standard box of gluten free cornflakes. I’m keeping the bag in my fridge so it stays fresh.

The downside to Purple Sunrise is its color, which comes from the black rice. My kids would probably like this cereal too if they were willing to taste it, but the purple hue is really throwing them. Of course, I haven’t been pushing it very hard because I want to hoard the cereal for myself.

My package of Purple Sunrise came with a 15 percent off coupon code which makes the cereal a lot more affordable. I emailed Kathy Blechel, the co-owner of Camano Island Mills and asked her if it would be okay to share this code online. She responded by creating a special coupon code for Herald readers that is good through Nov. 30 on any one or two pound bag of Purple Sunrise cereal, Organic Rainbow popcorn or the Cereal Lovers Package.

So if you decide to try Purple Sunrise yourself, sign onto Camano Island Mills and enter code: “MOMS15”.

I hope that our local grocery stores decide to stock Purple Sunrise soon. I’ve tried a lot of gluten free hot cereals, and I like this one the best!
