ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Landowners along Alaska Railroad will face new fees for encroaching onto railroad land.
The railroad board of directors voted Tuesday to charge neighbors who use railroad land near tracks and limit access.
The Anchorage Daily News reports railroad right of way typically reaches to 100 feet on both sides of tracks.
The railroad says neighbors over time have encroached and generated safety concerns.
Encroachments of more than 30 feet will be banned under the new policy.
Property owners using any part of the right of way will have to pay at least $250 plus a $250 application fee.
The railroad says no more than 100 landowners would be affected in Anchorage and the policy will be extended to Talkeetna, Portage Valley and the entire rail corridor.
