Property owners should decide use

In the Monday letter, "Rare wetlands need protection," Sarah Spear Cooke writes passionately about protecting a wetland, the "Hooven Bog," from its owner. She faults the state and county and offers her own expert opinion that they should intervene. We think other strategies are in order.
We realize the importance of maintaining wetland habitat. We have property that has beavers, red-wing blackbirds and other species dependent on wetland. We have built two houses and are in the throes of a third. Our country was built by owners of private property. We feel the people that can best decide how property should be used are the property owners, not activists who pay no taxes and are not burdened by excessive land regulations.
We urge Cooke and other interested parties buy the Hooven Bog. Failing this, she should involve the good folks at the Nature Conservancy and broker a deal so it may remain untouched.
