YAKIMA — Darrington overcame a 3-0 sweep against eventual state champion Colfax by defeating Davenport in five sets to earn third-place honors in the 2B State Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.
In the semifinal matchup, Loggers head coach Greg Powell knew his squad would have their work cut out for them, losing in straight sets 25-16, 25-4 and 25-6.
“The attitude (coming in) was fine,” Powell said of his as they prepared to face the Bulldogs. “Colfax just steamrolled through the tournament. We played them tough the first game and they just continued to put on amazing pressure. We just buckled.”
The third place match was a different story for Darrington. Behind Amy Miles’ 35 kills, three aces and two blocks the Loggers would defeat the Gorillas in a thriller (22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 13-25, 16-14). Miles’ performance in the third-place match would bring her kill total to 70 over the course of the tournament.
“Amy is a special athlete,” said Powell. “She’s a good back-row player, but she was exceptional in this tournament. She hardly had any errors, she was a real rock the whole tournament.”
Adding to Miles’ play on Saturday, Tayler Hoftell combined four 15 kills and two aces in the two matches and Riley Anderson added 54 assists.
