I applaud the recognition of police and firefighters for a week in Monroe, they do indeed keep our community safe. I just have one question. When my friend and coworker Jayme Biendl, a corrections officer at MCC, was murdered by an inmate, was that her 15 minutes in the spotlight, or was it just a lot of rhetoric to appease the people, like you and corrections officers, like myself?
Although I am recently retired, I take it as a personal insult that Monroe would forget about the job corrections officers do for the community. It's been a couple of years since Jayme paid the ultimate price, but how soon people forget!
The city of Monroe is snubbing a lot of DOC employees who work and live here, spend their money here, pay property taxes here. Where would they be if MCC were to close its doors? Whoever put this event together should be ashamed of putting this well-earned recognition week together, and forgetting all the DOC employees who work in Monroe. You wouldn't even have to bring them a lunch, nor invite them to the banquet.
