Winquist sets record in Silvertips' 1-0 victory

CALGARY, Alberta -- It was a historic night for Joshua Winquist.
It wasn't bad for the rest of the Everett Silvertips, either.
Winquist set the Silvertips' consecutive games' scoring record, and Everett continued to roll as the Tips knocked off the Calgary Hitmen 1-0 Saturday night to cap off a perfect road trip.
Winquist scored the game's only goal early in the second period. Not only did it stand up as the game-winner, it gave Winquist points in 16 consecutive games. That surpasses the previous franchise-record points streak of 15 games, set by Zach Hamill from Sept. 23-Nov. 7, 2006.
Winquist has 14 goals and 22 assists during his streak, and he currently ranks third in the WHL in scoring with 48 points in 27 games.
Austin Lotz made 25 saves to record the shutout in goal for Everett (19-4-4-0), which completed a sweep of its four-games-in-five-nights road trip through the Central Division. Everett won all four games by one goal, and Lotz earned the win in all four. The Tips also finished the season a perfect 6-0 against the Central Division.
The victory also ended Everett's busiest stretch of the season. The Tips played 10 games during the past 16 days. Everett went 7-1-2-0 during that stretch, vaulting the Tips into first place in the entire WHL.
Chris Driedger made 26 saves in net for the Hitmen (13-7-1-3), who had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Neither team found the net during the first period. Everett had a pair of power plays and outshot Calgary 12-5 in the period.
But Everett finally made the breakthrough early in the second period, and inevitably it was Winquist who found the crack. The Tips were on the power play when Winquist beat Driedger with a shot into the top of the net, giving Everett a 1-0 lead at 5 minutes, 13 seconds.

The Tips continued to control the period and nearly added to their lead, but Driedger made several good saves, including a diving glove stop to deny Winquist his second goal of the game.
Everett controlled the first two periods, outshooting Calgary 24-9. However, the momentum turned in the third as the Hitmen pressed for the tying goal. Calgary outshot Everett 16-3 in the period, but Lotz stopped all 16 shots, including several big saves. First, he made a big stop when Jake Virtanen made a strong move to the net. Then he denied Kenton Helgesen after Helgesen got a step on the defense. Finally, in the closing seconds there was a mad scramble in front of the Everett net with Driedger pulled for an extra attacker, but Lotz kept the puck out as the Tips held on for victory.
