Reader poll: Contenders?

First off, Silvertips winger Joshua Winquist received another honor this morning, being named the WHL Player of the Week for the second time this season. Winquist had four goals and four assists as the Tips went 4-0, and he extended his scoring streak to 16 games, setting a new Everett franchise record.

Meanwhile, the Tips keep on winning. Everett was facing a brutal November, with 13 games in the first 23 days of the month. That included the recently-completed four-games-in-five-nights road trip through the Central Division.

How did the Tips fare? Everett went 9-2-2-0 in those 13 games. The Tips moved into a tie for first place in the entire WHL when they beat Portland 3-2 on Nov. 15, and they've remained there ever since. Currently Everett has a three-point lead on Portland atop the league standings.

This is an Everett team that finished eighth in the 10-team Western Conference each of the past three seasons. Sure, the team was expected to be better this season, but when the front office made its guarantee to season ticket holders, it didn't guarantee a championship, it guaranteed no worse than sixth in the conference. No one predicted Everett as a title contender before the season began.

But the season is more than a third over now, so I guess it's time to ask the question.
