Ranch Motel to close in Fairbanks after 45 years
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports the Ranch Motel planned to check out its last guest Tuesday.
Manager Donna Gilbert, who has been politically active as president of the Interior Taxpayers Association, says she's closing the hotel because of increased utility costs, a higher neighborhood crime rate and fewer summertime tourists.
The planned repaving of South Cushman Street next summer also clinched the decision.
Gilbert has a minority stake in the corporation that owned the hotel. She says it probably will be demolished.
The original owners were Gilbert's father and financial backers from Wisconsin. Gilbert says the hotel in 1969 was assembled from furnished double-wide trailers in about 36 hours.
