Irish defensive back KeiVarae Russell, who converted to cornerback from his running back days at Mariner H.S., will be on the same field as former Archbishop Murphy linebacker and current Cardinal Sam Shober when Notre Dame takes on Stanford at 4 p.m.
The two never played against each other in high school, but played on the same team as eighth graders when they were on the Silverlake Timberwolves junior football team in the fall of 2007.
Russell, who was a highly recruited prospect coming out of high school, got a full-ride scholarship to Notre Dame, while Shober walked on at Stanford. Shober, who is listed as a sophomore outside linebacker, dresses for all Cardinal home games and got playing time in the second half of last Saturday's blowout win over Cal. Shober earned a sack on the final play of Saturday's game.
Russell is fifth on Notre Dame with 47 tackles so far this season and leads the team with five passes defensed.
