Outdoors events: Mushrooms, avalanches and more

Mushrooms: Langdon Cook, author of “The Mushrooms Hunters,” will be speaking about his book at several upcoming events. He’s in Seattle Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday, Dec. 10 and Dec. 18. I took a class with him once and he’s knowledgeable and engaging. Get more details here.

The Wonderland Trail: Tami Asars, the author of “Hiking The Wonderland Trail,” will speak at the Seattle REI on Wednesday. Asars will offer a visual presentation on the trail, as well as talking about the logistics of hiking the 93-mile loop. Get more info here.

For paddlers: The Deception Pass Dash, a 6-mile paddle through Deception Pass, is Sunday. You’ll need a good amount of paddling experience to participate. The swirling waters of Deception Pass can be tricky. Get more info here.

Ski/board care: Learn about the basics of taking care of your skis or snowboard on Dec. 9 at the Alderwood REI. Get more info here.

Hiking basics: Get all the basic info you need to start hiking in safety and comfort. The Mountaineers are offering a free seminar in Seattle on Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m. Get more info and register here.

Avalanche safety: Learn about avalanche safety from Erik Swanson, an expert in the field. It’s a 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at The Mountaineers in Seattle. It’s free, but registration is requested. Get more info and register here.

County birds: The Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count is Dec. 14 in the Everett area and Dec. 21 in the Edmonds area. Less experienced birders can be paired with those with more experience. If you’d like to participate, get more info here.

Winged Migration: Learn about birds around the world in the beautiful documentary “Winged Migration.” The film is being shown at the Northwest Stream Center at 7 p.m. on Dec. 20. It’s free, but you need to call 425-316-8592 to register. Get more info here.

Backcountry film festival: See 10 independent films that celebrate the joys of the outdoors in winter. The Winter Wildlands Alliance Backcountry Film Festival is Jan. 10 in Seattle. Tickets are $12 ($10 for Mountaineers members.)
