EVERETT — There are 72,258 potential candidates.
At least, that’s the number of registered voters within the Everett School District who’d be eligible to fill a vacancy after Everett School Board President Jeff Russell resigned over the weekend.
The remaining four board members are expected to appoint Russell’s successor in January.
Everett is one of few districts in the state with six-year terms for school board members. Russell had served four years when he submitted his resignation on Sunday.
“Whoever is appointed will fill the vacancy until the next regular district election, which would be 2015,” Snohomish County elections manager Garth Fell said.
The last time there was an appointment to the school board was in 2006 when Ed Petersen was chosen to replace Paul Roberts. Petersen later was elected to a full term.
The district has nearly 19,000 students and annual expenses of more than $180 million.
There are two ways people can be considered as candidates to fill the vacancy. They can be nominated or they can apply.
Application materials are available from the superintendent’s office.
Nominations are due by 4:30 p.m. Dec. 13; applications by 4:30 p.m. Dec. 20.
The board is scheduled to meet at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 6 to review all applications. The board plans to discuss qualifications of the candidates in executive session. Up to five finalists will be chosen in open session.
Candidate interviews are scheduled for Jan. 9. and are planned in open session. The final vote is planned in open session.
A position on the school board pays $50 a meeting or for attending other events, up to a maximum $4,800 a year, according to school district policies.
